David Pogue dedicates an entire Appendix A to "what's missing in OSX.1" that we knew and loved in 9.x, in his new Missing Manual for OS 10.1" (www.missingmanual.com) and it's a fine work, but he doesn't spend too much time on remedies.

However, he understands our pain. In one chapter he mentions Robert Woodhead's PopUpX utility. http://www.madoverlord.com/Projects/POPUPX.t

Reading his page, Robert is right in synch with the near obsessive mission and sentiment of this thread. He's had about 6,000 downloads so far.

So now Tabbed Popup Windows have returned. I have to try this! He's even provided key commands.

Now...Where are the spring-loaded folders?

And the ultimate hack-- a utility for switching the new Application menu so it *follows on the right* after the last of the app's menus. We're used to new menus appearing AT THE RIGHT, not interrupting the Apple, File, Edit pattern we're grown used to and which accelerates productivity.

And what about icon color labels? Where's those go?

Now the positionable trash can has returned, as TrashX, in all its OSX mesh glory, and then some! Anybody use it? Please rate.

Lanny, how is a trash can "slow?" Can you elaborate? What actions are slow with trashX? Is it slowing down your whole system?

For those of you who miss labels and wonder what a column-view, Classic-type Finder for OS X would be like, check out Coela , now in a new beta version with a new theme. You'll have your old Special menu back, here, as well. You can also change fonts and sizes in its Finder, sort by date, kind, etc.

Don't worry about the Japanese; the program is written in English.

Cool! Thanks, Phil. This person has been busy! Do they understand Tog points? What would you give it?

Did you you ever want the apple menu back?

Well Classic menu allows you to do that (a 5 tog program in my mind), but it does not integrate with the OSX apple menu. Instead it just sits on top of it.

FruitMenu actually lets you modify the OSX apple menu, by enabling features already inherent in OSX, but not enabled by Apple. This program is awesome! You must try it. I liked Classic menu a whole lot, but I love this haxie even better! 5+++ Togs!

www.unsanity.com is the website to find FruitMenu.

Loren, I'd give Coela 5 tog points for being as good as or better than any OS 9 Column view Finder substitution (Simple Browser, Greg's Browser).

Having used the X Finder for a few months before crarko referred us to Coela, I've grown accustomed to some of its niceties like the configurable toolbar, preview column, copying files, and a few other things.

Enjoy Coela. Great thread you got going, here.

Phil

Phil, you wrote-

How about old-fashioned disk or folder info in the window header? Anything like that? (I'm tachyon--challenged to assess this one just now.)

Thanks. It's your too!

Sounds powerful. What have you modified so far?
