By no coincidence perhaps, while offline I missed
the one thread on this site that makes mention of
fseventer. This cool piece of software deserves a
place on the freeware list... as well as being a tool
more often recommended for troubleshooting use.
(it graphically traces filesystem events)

Check it out people!

Sweet outliner:
Designed for use by writers of all kinds, Scrivener is a virtual writing studio that integrates the processes of outlining, storyboarding, research and writing. It's a notebook. It's an outliner. It's a cork notice-board. It's a ring-binder. It's a place to store and cross-reference your research. It's a basic word processor. From first idea to first draft: Edit. Outline. Storyboard. Write.

Requires Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) - Universal for both Intel and PPC

Scrivener Gold
Scrivener Gold is a freeware release of an early beta version of Scrivener.

Scrivener has evolved a lot since this beta - the interface is much prettier and more intuitive, and the feature-set, whilst generally the same, has been refined and much improved. Scrivener Gold is missing the niceties you would expect from a finished application (such as state-saving) and may well have a few minor bugs lurking around, but it is nonetheless a fully-functional piece of software that writers of all kinds should find useful for maintaining and organising writing and research.

Pretty goshdarn great for a "beta".
Download it NOW from <this page>.

I am surprised NeoOffice has not shown up prior to this. While it is OpenOffice at the core it is much better integrated into OS X and does not require X11 to run.

I have always cursed that it takes me so long to find the cursor, especially when first swithched on or from sleep so am ecstatic with the Mouselocator Freeware suggested by you. Many, grateful thanks.

Although it is not comprised entirely of freeware, this list, "An overview of some of the text editors available for Mac OS X as of Jan, 2007," prepared by propeller-head, is an excellent resource.

PaulShades appends Papyrus and RagTime 6 to the list here.

The MacWorld article Summer of Mac Gems ’08 describes a number of great freeware (and shareware) programs, which may not have been included in the listings above.

Okay... apparently this is really *old* news, but -- if you didn't already know it -- get ready for a treat!!!

These freewares come courtesy of one German and one Frenchman.
[as a "subscriber" to G-Force, I think I'm done with SoundSpectrum]

Download these two items (be patient... the servers are slowwww):

iVisualize 1.6 (2006-Sep-25)
BeComposed 1.5.1 (2006-Dec-20)

iVisualize is an iTunes plugin that plays quartz compositions, such as BeComposed.

All downloaded? Okay, now...
  • quit iTunes

  • run the iVisualize 1.6 installer

  • find and remove the old version of BeComposed that iVisualize installs: /Library/iTunes/iVisualize/BeComposed

  • replace it with the newer BeComposed_1.5.1.qtz

  • launch iTunes and select iVisualize from the View-> Visualizer menu

  • play a fun song (such as "Make Me Sway" by Echolyn)

  • start the visualizer (command-T)

  • go into iVisualize's prefs and select BeComposed_1.5.1

  • now the "composition settings" button allows us to tweak BeComposed_1.5.1's prefs
    [e.g., turn off "Christmas_mode" and "Show_help_on_start", etc.]
ENJOY
