Adding my serial # in alphabetical order. 1.25Ghz eMac, bought Sept 2004. The tech guy at Apple Australia claimed no knowledge of the problem. I had to direct him to the discussion. I told him I'd sit on the problem until Apple were prepared to do the right thing.

Cheers.

Well, after fighting a battle against my eMac that I was hoping would be a 'software issue'...after making a health stack of back-up's. ....I have stumbled across this page, and the puzzle fell into place!!!! The constant reboot's of the puter due to deadlock freezing...and...Oh yes...the forshadowing of a crackly glitch. I too suffer from Capacitor Problems. Got off the phone with Macintosh, and the lady played the role of "didn't know anything about it"....hmmm..ya....Doesn't sound like there going to help...so get to talk to some one higher up tomorrow...(still thinking im screwed!) Doesn't realy make sence to me....Buy an expensive and great product.....find out that there is a manufacture error in it.....then, (the good part )....have to pay an arm and a leg to get it fixed. Ya, cause regular people have that kind of money just kickn around. i totally agree that they should recall or supply THERE CUSTOMERS with some sort of relief. My puter is dying.....add me to the list: G8429GK5QQJ.

7ravis.

Having worked in retail selling computers for a few years I know the benefit of AppleCare and will not buy a computer (or other major appliance) without an extended warranty. So my eMac was having this problem so I brought it into the nearest Apple Store.

I never opened it up as I lost the hex head wrench to take the stand off my eMac so I don't know if the capacitor was buldging, but was having the same issue as listed here and on apple.com/support

Serial number is:
G84350PSQQJ

Purchased Sept. 4th, 2004

They have had it since the 14th of this month and have yet to get it back. They said 6-9 days and yesterday was the 9th day. The tech there at the Apple Store had never heard of a specific problem like this.

Just adding an additional datapoint. Not my computer, but that of a customer.

eMac purchased August 2004, S/N G8429CCPQJ8.

It was initially freezing so often I could hardly diagnose it. Bringing up the screensaver control panel item seemed to induce freezing, and most freezes (screensaver or not) would have some portion of the video display scrambled, almost identically to images I've seen uploaded on other forums (Apple support forum, I think).

Did a clean install of 10.4 and it did not fix the problem, and that's when I got clued into possible hardware problems. Had the access panel off to swap memory modules around but don't remember any cap problems, but I didn't know about them at the time and wasn't looking for them (and presumably they could be anywhere, not just in plain sight).

Emailed a manager I know at an Apple store, he's referring the S/N and other info to his tech guru, hoping for at least a free part. It's kind of a wash on free part with paid install vs. Applecare and another 15 months of warranty, the latter will be my recommendation if Apple won't kick loose with a free part.

Just an update. I got the call to come pick up my system today.

Picked it up and seems to be working fine so far.

Like I said I have AppleCare in my eMac so I paid for nothing, but the dollar ammount of the service they did on it which was then zeroed out was $399.06 total.

SVC MLB 1.25 GHZ EMAC NF - $264.06
HARDWARD REPAIR LEVEL 2 - $135.00

as stated on my reciept. Oh, this is US$.

Sure enough... opened the cover on the ram door and there is orange goo coming out the top of the capacitor. System locks up with a display shimmer and forces a reboot.

Machine Model: eMac
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.25 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.2f1
Serial Number: G844204BQJB
Sales Order Number:

Just out of warranty too, not a bit happy with this situation. Brought the machine into service and they kept overnight, status is a new logic board $450 plus labor.

Please Apple, help the group.
