just purchased the QS M8493 ( 933 MHz .5G RAM ).

What has my stymied is the audio out port ( not the headphone out port ).

What is the type/size of plug-in for the audio out port mother Apple ?

In my process of trying to figure out the type/size of that said plug-in I tried my headphone's plug-in and it would not fit although it did fit in the headphone out port.

Please tell me folks what is the type/size of that plug-in for the audio out port.

Why did apple engineers design two different size holes for the 2 audio out ports? I know that when you plug-in headphones it cuts out the sound to the internal speakers but why design a different size hole for the other audio out port ?

To prevent someone from plugging the wrong device into the socket.

It took some research to figure out which model the M8493 is, most of us do not know our Macs by model number rather by name, which in your case is Quicksilver. Thanks to the excellent MacTracker utility I found the larger jack is a 3.5 mm analog port for use with headphones. The other is a 2.5 mm port designed for use with the Apple Pro speakers.

Thanks for your interest/reply to my question.

You gave me a good laugh about plugging in the wrong port: thank good there's no killer voltage in those out ports.

I quoted the M8493 number because there are so many different QSilvers that apple issued. I used to own a QS but I can't recall today that it had a 2.5 mm sized audio out port.

Are you aware if there's an adapter to bridge the 2.5 mm stereo port to a 3.5 mm stereo port ?

Albeit I realize that I will have to go usb audio in/out.

Just curious about the size of that port and if there are adapters. Perhaps RadioShack, CircutCity or my electronics tech guy may be able to build one for me.

You should read this link: Click here

Especially the warning part:

In reply to:

Warning: Some types of headphones and other audio devices have a 2.5 mm plug. You should not to plug such devices into the Apple Speaker sound output port. Doing so could damage the devices. The Apple Speakers include an internal ROM that enables the computer to identify the speakers. Speakers other than the Apple Speakers should not be connected to the Apple Speaker sound output port.

There once was a product called the, "ProSpeaker Breakout Cable," made by Griffin, but now discontinued. It converted the output to speaker terminals so that other speakers could be safely powered from the Macs audio amplifier. No conversion to line level outputs was offered.
