While browsing, suddenly the connection will drop off. It seems to be random and can last from a minute or so up to several. Rebooting seems to help "reset" the connection.

Comcast has sent over many techs, none of whom can seem to remedy the problem.

One perhaps odd thing is that I am using an AirPort Extreme hooked up to a NetGear Wireless Modem. Could that be causing the trouble?

What kind of wireless router do you use ? if non Apple then you might want to update the router firmware to the latest.
I've seen few units specially macbook/macbook pro running Leopard and latest updates have dropped connection intermittently and usually the problem is not happening when connected to Airport base station.
also you can try to temp. to disable encryption in your wireless and see if you still have dropping connection.

Is the NetGear Wireless Modem also a router like the AirPort Extreme? Hooking up two wireless devices or wireless routers can cause all sorts of interference issues including dropouts. I was having dropout problems with my Netgear Wireless router, and I discovered that it was due to interference from a wireless TV mirroring device in another room.

I believe it is. Should we just use one of them then? Not even sure how to do that. I suppose my AirPort would be wasted then, which would be less than ideal.

Had this happen the other night and FINALLY figured it was my wireless phones conflicting...

Had signal - had my wife pick up and dial phone - signal gone!
Hang up phone - signal back ---


I reset the channel used on router and - problem gone..

Check yours...

Now might also be a good time to shop for a replacement cordless phone system in a different frequency spectrum....the 2.4Ghz band that is shared by 802.11b/g/(n) is pretty crowded with lots of competition from other devices, not just the phone. (your microwave oven, and all bluetooth devices to just name a couple)

There are now digital spread spectrum cordless phones in the 5.6Ghz band that significantly outperform your current handset and make your 2.4Ghz phones look weak by comparison.....and they probably cost less now than your original purchase.
