Is your iMac an Intel-based Mac? MacSpeech Dictate will work on Tiger (OS X.4.11) and Leopard OX X.5.1) but it won't work with either of those operating systems if the computer is not an Intel processor.

The other issue that I haven't seen any information about is whether you can install the same program on two computers. Which computer did you install the program on to first, the iMac or the MacBook?

There is some information, can't recall where I saw it, that says that if you need to reinstall the program you will have to obtain Licence Keys. I haven't seen any explanation as to whether a Licence Key is the same thing as the Registration Code that came with the program or not.

If you look at your account with MacSpeech there is an item "Licence Keys." (Do people who have bought right into Dictate without having had a copy of iListen have an account with MacSpeech?) There are no Licence Keys in my account and so far MacSpeech has not answered any questions about whether purchase of MacSpeech Dictate either as a first copy or an a crossgrade allows for more than one installation, or for re-installation if the first installation crashes.

So many unanswered questions! However, I am impressed with the speech recognition quality. The immediate editing capacity is poor but I suggest you search out and watch UTube for ideas. It seems that each day there is a new video clip with demonstrations on how to do something with Dictate.

As for editing and managing, I am finding that some of the commands that worked on iListen also work on Dictate. I haven't tested many, but have already found that the command "new paragraph" works. Most of the UTube demos use "next line next line" to start a new paragraph with line between text. Seems akin to those of us who stick with a double click of the mouse as a holdover from the single button mouse.

Unfortunately new users to MacSpeech don't have much information on how to use commands or what commands work. It must be very confusing.

It appears that most of the commands from iListen work on MacSpeech Dictate. I found that I could dictate signs and symbols into the Notepad, TextEdit, and AppleWorks. Here is a sample

$#& + etc.

I also found that the old dictation commands from iListen mostly work in those applications but they don't work when I'm dictating to this forum.

I'm wondering why MacSpeech didn't include a note in their brochure that came with Dictate to clue us into the fact that these commands work. Anyone who had a copy of iListen and persisted with the program long enough to learned some of the commands would probably naturally or out of curiosity try the commands. But someone buying the program for the first time, even though they may be impressed by the straight dictation capacity of Dictate, will have no clue as to how to get from straight dictation to a finished product.

This is in response to someone who asked about how the boldface and italicize text, I'm hoping you will see this reply.

If anyone would like a copy of the commands from the last version of iListen I have opened up my e-mail address and am willing to send the PDF to anyone that asks. If I end up with too many requests will try to find some other place to post this information.

I installed on the iMac first, and since it crashed on every launch, I tried it next on the MacBook, where it works. I remember reading somewhere that the licensing agreement states that you can ony have it on one computer at a time, but you can move it from one to another computer that you own.

In reply to:

I'm sure that MacSpeech are receiving a TORRENT of angry emails, kwim?

Yes, seeing as how they heave not yet even responded to my inquiries about having the issue he first one being well over a week ago and have given me no instructions on how to proceed to get a replacement data disk... I am sure you are correct that they are indeed receiving a "torrent" of angry email.

I am exploring murky and dark waters as we speak, I tell ya, I don't much like the looks of the place but if this is where my treasure lies then so be it, others sailing in that place may be scallawags and scoundrels looking for ill gotten gain, but I have a legitimate claim to the prize. So I can't see why I would be in the wrong... Others may see it differently I guess, if I find the "X" I will have to make that decision on whether to cross the line in the sand.

The MacSpeech Dictate User Manual is now available on their MacSpeech website under "Support".

Although I was one of the fortunate people to receive a working copy right off, I did have a question about using Licence Keys to install the program on my second computer.

Today I received this reply (the message was sent at 10 pm on a Sunday evening. Hope this assauges the ire of those people who suggested that MacSpeech ought not to take the weekend off, but that every employee including the execs should be working full out.)

"We would like to apologize for any delay in response to you or confusion surrounding our current support system. We have encountered significant issues over the last few weeks and are currently phasing out use of this particular system to an outsourced company that will be much more reliable for helping our customers. If you have been affected by this, we want to take full responsibility for your inconvenience and help you solve your problem in anyway we possibly can.

Your license keys are available at the macspeech account for the email address above. Anytime you need them, that's where you go. I have included the instructions on how to use them if you want to use Dictate on more than one computer. It is totally fine to have the different email addresses, just remember that all your Dictate information is associated with this account.

To find your license key, you will need to log into your MacSpeech account on the second computer you wish to use the software on using your email address and password. Once there, go to Account Information and scroll down until you see View My License Keys. Under options you will see a Zip file. Click on it, and choose save to disk. Once it's saved, double click on it and it will open up another file that has your name in it. You do not need to open this file but put it somewhere you will remember it. Now, launch Dictate. When it asks you whether you want to register or select license key, select license key and then browse to find the file you unzipped. Upload it and this will open your software on the new computer. I hope this answered your question. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance to you and thanks again for your patience and support of MacSpeech.

Again, I am so very sorry about the delay in responding to your tickets and please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you in the future." - MacSpeech Support
