Has anyone used this yet? It's only been available a few days, I know (and only to upgrades, I believe) but I'm curious what the feedback is...

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum as it's not troubleshooting. I looked about and thought it was my best shot. Mods please move to a better place if desired. Thx!

I purchased MacSpeech at MacWorld '08. I received it the first week in March, '08. I am using a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I have no external keyboards or mice attached.

I have installed it under 10.5.1. But it crashes when I attempt to do the first task which is to "Create a Profile". I have worked with the first tier of their support. We uninstalled it. Reinstalled it. It still crashed.

I have upgraded Leopard to 10.5.2 thinking that that might make a change. It still crashes when attempting to "Create a Profile."

My work with their support has escalated from their "tier 1" to their "tier 2" support. I am waiting for a phone call from them to see what is going on.

The one thing that I haven't tried is having the Plantronics headset attached while I am trying to "Create a Profile". That may make a difference. If it does, I'll repost here.

I have substantially the same mac setup and I have the same issue. With or without the headset plugged in the result is the same. Have tried everthing including dumping the preferences and reinstalling. Please let me know what happens when (if) tech support solves your problem.

Their on-line tech support is non-existent!

Thanks

Just a "me too" but I too have roughly the same set up (mac powerbook pro, 4 gb RAM, 2.33Mhz Intel) and Dictate crashes when trying to create new user profile. Huh.

Hi everyone,
Quite excited when the Xgrade arrived. But I've been having the same problem. MacBook Intel Core Duo. Leopard 10.5.2. VXI Headphones connected or unconnected. I press create profile....the program freezes after a few seconds then quits. And the Mac Speech support site is down. Hopefully the remedy won't be too far away.

Hmm. I went ahead and ordered my copy before anyone posted replies to my initial question. It came last Thursday and yesterday was the first chance I got to install (which was nervy as I'd already read about the problems!) But I seem to have got it all working fine. Or at least, I created a profile and went through the learning phase. Haven't had much chance to use it yet as I'm on a work deadline but will do soon. I'll report back once I have.

Btw, I'm using a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MBP with 4GB ram under 10.4.11

Oh, and I set up the headset first (went into System prefs, etc) and then installed Dictate.

MacSpeech requested that I send them my computer setup i.e. "About this Mac", the section on "more info" which is a .spx file. I sent them that information and also the Crash Report that is produced when the program crashes.

Here's the email reply that I got from MacSpeech about the possible causes of the crash on trying to create a new profile.

There are several possible causes for this error:
1) having FileVault turned on
2) punctuation marks, symbols, foreign language characters, or high ASCII characters in the name of the hard drive
3) punctuation marks, symbols, foreign language characters, or high ASCII characters in the userid used to login to the Macintosh
4) punctuation marks, symbols, foreign language characters, or high ASCII characters in the name of the voice profile (depending on when this error appears)
5) a network set up where the user's home folder is located on a server
6) having more than one hard drive installed in the Macintosh which has the same name (Apple ships multiple drive systems with all drives being the same name figuring that users will change the appropriate drive names)

I do NOT have FileVault turned on. I don't believe that I have any punctuation marks, symbols, foreign language characters, or high ASCII characters in the hard drive name, the userid, the voice profile name. My home folder is on my laptop. I have only one drive in my laptop. I'm going to reply to them with this information and see if I can get a person to actually speak with me about this. I'll try installing the Plantronics headset prior to creating the new profile as the previous user has done.

I'm having the same issue as others are reporting here: installed on MBP 2.16GHz/Mac OS X 10.5.2, FileVault _not_ enabled, no non-alpha characters in HD name, user name, etc. When I try to create the new profile, I get an indeterminate progress bar for a few seconds then the app quits. Tried reinstalling, etc. Nothing helps. Very frustrated!

Have you had any meaningful response from Macspeech regarding your crashing when you try to make a profile? I have same problem and also have been moved "to the next tier" by their support, but all in all they have been no help. It has been a week.

Did they give you any help you care to pass on?

Thanks

Hans

No, nothing meaningful yet. I did post what they sent in their email about no characters, etc.....It is quite odd because I have been looking around on the net for other references to MacSpeech and there seem to be people who are able to run the program. I'm being patient for the time being.....I'm assuming/hoping that someone from their company will see that there are a significant number of people having the same problem and I'm hoping they'll post some kind of commentary on their site. I even emailed David Pogue and asked him if he had phone access to the MacSpeech company to give them a heads up about this problem.....unfortunately when companies don't respond, they start to get a bad reputation.
