The MacSpeech Dictate User Manual is now available on their MacSpeech website under "Support" at www.macspeech.com/support_center.Although I was one of the fortunate people to receive a working copy right off, I did have a question about using Licence Keys to install the program on my second computer. Today I received this reply (the message was sent at 10 pm on a Sunday evening. Hope this assauges the ire of those people who suggested that MacSpeech ought not to take the weekend off, but that every employee including the execs should be working full out.) "We would like to apologize for any delay in response to you or confusion surrounding our current support system. We have encountered significant issues over the last few weeks and are currently phasing out use of this particular system to an outsourced company that will be much more reliable for helping our customers. If you have been affected by this, we want to take full responsibility for your inconvenience and help you solve your problem in anyway we possibly can. Your license keys are available at the macspeech account for the email address above. Anytime you need them, that's where you go. I have included the instructions on how to use them if you want to use Dictate on more than one computer. It is totally fine to have the different email addresses, just remember that all your Dictate information is associated with this account. To find your license key, you will need to log into your MacSpeech account on the second computer you wish to use the software on using your email address and password. Once there, go to Account Information and scroll down until you see View My License Keys. Under options you will see a Zip file. Click on it, and choose save to disk. Once it's saved, double click on it and it will open up another file that has your name in it. You do not need to open this file but put it somewhere you will remember it. Now, launch Dictate. When it asks you whether you want to register or select license key, select license key and then browse to find the file you unzipped. Upload it and this will open your software on the new computer. I hope this answered your question. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance to you and thanks again for your patience and support of MacSpeech. Again, I am so very sorry about the delay in responding to your tickets and please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you in the future." Hope this helps more people get going with MacSpeech. Frangelica

FWIW, MacSpeech Dictate 1.0.1 was released yesterday, including AppleScript support, improved documentation and license support, and some bug fixes.

So, I got my new Data Disk.
I was able to delete the old Data file as per the instructions noted previously in this series of posts.
I was able to to load the new data disk.
However, MacSpeech then launched a window that said that it appears that I first installed the program greater than 14 days ago and that I would need to register it. When I tried to register it, it told me that I needed an "Activation" key.
I can't find anywhere in the documentation the "activation" key or the "license" key.
So, I will call them in the morning and see if anyone there can help me.
I must say, this is a deplorably frustrating experience. I'm sure it's no fun for the people at MacSpeech either.
Morning of 4/4/2008:
I spoke to MacSpeech support: The registration code was on the back of the CD envelope that contained one of the two CDs that came in the MacSpeech Box (either the Application CD or the English Data disk).
It turns out that I had already registered the program when I first got it. But, I was having difficulty seeing my license string in my account because I had registered using one email account, and I was trying to log in to that account using a different email address. They were able to tell me which email account I had used to register originally, and then, I was able to see my license string. I downloaded the license string and was able to successfully launch MacSpeech, make a profile, and begin dictating. Which works fine. I then downloaded the update and it works fine, too.
So, now I am off to a running start and hope to continue to have successful experiences with this program.
Thanks to everyone who helps each other by using these forums. And thanks to MacSpeech for persisting!
Yvonne

Like everyone else, I've been experience the same disk problem. I've tried deleting the data file and reinstalling, no luck
I tried connecting to the recently posted web address. It's great! (sarcasm). Nothing regarding Macspeech Dictate problems that I could find, although I learned lots of information about how wonderful their program is. (For who?) Actually, I found out all of the things it should do, but I can't make it do.
My problem might be a little different than others. Seems they are very proud to announce they have an update. They have a link to their press release talking about it:
MacSpeech Releases first minor update to MacSpeech Dictate
Well this update, creates new problems. When you try to create your profile after hopefully installing the program, a window opens letting you know about it. Your choices are skip for now, remind me later, or download and install. Wow, wouldn't it be great if you download and install a patch or upgrade that took care of the bad disk issue? Maybe this download will do it?
Well, we will never know. At least for now, for you cannot skip, remind or install while the create a profile is open and of course, when you try to create the profile, the program closes. Surprise, so does the window to download.
Hooray for the update!!!!!!!!!!
This is by far one of the worst pieces of software I have every purchased from a "major" software firm, and without a doubt, the worst support site of a major software firm.
I love that they know their disks are bad for those made before March 20. But instead of putting up an image that can only be downloaded by entering your license number, (a very easy and sensible work around) they expect you to waste even more time and effort trying to get a hold of them, waiting forever in the standard telephone que from hell, and of course only during business hours, so there goes more of my money, (time during business hours are money). Then if we get lucky not to have the que disconnected (see wired magazine 30 things that suck, i.e. customer service) we can wait for someone to take information we have already given them when we had to register and enter our license number, than wait around for the shipping department to get the order, pack it, and of course, no expedited free shipping so we wait even more.
Of course, they could also mark all new boxes with a date of when the new disk is in it, or send replacement disks to the retailers to be given to you at the time of purchase, but hey, why should they when we get to pay $200 to be their quality control staff. What a country. You no longer have to hire staff for quality control have people who have to click through and agree to the ULEA do it for you. Then they get to spend hours of frustration trying to get it to work when your company already knows the reason. And since you've opened and installed the product after the date the company knows there is a MAJOR problem, you are stuck with it. Nobody takes back open software.
So now I must trust their representation that the new disk that I'll have to call for, and wait to be delivered is the solution.
When the new disk arrives, we hope that is the only problem. Me, I don't see my Chinese made Platronic headset that came in the box, showing that it turns on no matter what I do. Of course, it could be that it only works with high quality program packaged with it, but I won't know until after I receive the disk.
Biggest waste of $200 I've ever spent on a single piece of software.
I hope my problem is resolved the way others seem to have, but with I haven't seen anyone mention the update window. If anyone has, and has been able to get this fine piece of engineering to work, please update this post. I

I too have the same problem, can't create first user profile. I tried to uninstall and reinstall using their method, but it did not work.
I am a long time user of Dragon (on Windows) and from what I hear all you saying here, I just may have to load Parallels and Dragon Nat. Speaking on my Mac to get the performance I'm used to. I have an enormous amount of voice files built up over the years with Dragon, which works fantastic. (why did I switch!)
I had iListen 1.7 and then 1.8, so I was eager to get MacSpeech Dictate. iListen at least worked, not that great compared to Dragon. Not even close.
You mean you can't add new words? It doesn't have a spelling mode? You got to be kidding. If that's the case, I will demand a refund.
If I could only see what you are talking about.
I am deeply disappointed in MacSpeech. I ordered a USB mic from the company in January, and they had to call me in March to get my credit card # again, since they had not placed my order yet! 2 months! And when I called, their voice mail messages were full so I couldn't even leave a message.
I will not patronage this company ever again. Their customer service has been nothing short of terrible and their web site totally sucks as far as support is concerned. Are they guys over their heads? Something ain't right.
Thanks for all the suggestions and answers folks.

I seem to have a completely different problem than what I've read so far in this forum (At least it seems so). On my iMac, which is one of the newer ones, the program crashes upon launch -- I can't even get to the profiles part. I deleted the data file and reinstalled it two or three times, but still no solution. I don't think it's the data disk, because I did successfully install Dictate on my MacBook laptop, which is running the same OS as my iMac (10.4.11). So I'm absolutely stumped! I have a similar problem. Installed Dictate and it worked fine for a couple of months, then it suddenly started crashing upon launching! My iMac (new) easily meets all of the requirements, and, like I said, Dictate worked fine at first. I tried all the standard troubleshooting steps: reinstalling, creating a new test user, etc. Now here's the strange part: I contacted MacSpeech Support, and they said to send them a system report from System Profiler via email. But every time I did they said they couldn’t open it! A friend in my Mac User group had no problem opening it. So I had him send it to them. They said they still couldn’t open it and so they couldn’t help me with my problem! The only thing I can think of now is a clean System Software reinstall (ugh). I had MacSpeech's previous product, iListen, and had similar problems with unreliability. MacSpeech Dictate has a great engine, but unfortunately it's still hobbled by a less than ideal programming team--MacSpeech itself.
