I hate to quote myself, but I hope someone has advice.

I bought a TrendNet TE100-P1P print server. TrendNet claims that Mac OS X is
supported. Here's the statement on how to configure the print server for a Mac:

"Note: The Print Server can be managed using the PS-Utility or a web browser.
For Mac users, change your computer's IP address to 192.168.0.X (where X is
an available number from 2-254). Since the Print Server's default IP address is
192.168.0.1, make sure no other network devices are assigned an IP address
of 192.168.0.1. Then enter http://192.168.0.1 in your web browser to access
the Print Server's Web Utility."

If I try to change my Mac's IP address to 192.168.0.X, I lose connectivity to
my router, which has IP address 192.168.1.1.

Does anyone have a solution for this Catch 22?

Otherwise, the TrendNet goes back.

Thanks,

Unless I completely misunderstand things, the instructions you quote are indeed confusing. Accessing device admin pages is (1) only temporary, bypassing the catch-22, and (2) doesn't usually require you to change the Mac's IP number. Try this:

Disconnect the Mac from the router, hook up the print server directly to your Mac with an ethernet cable, enter the server's IP number in your Mac's web browser, and adjust the server settings on the setup page to your specs. Then disconnect the server and restore your normal router/server config.

PS, because your query's topic is different from that of the thread you posted in (help - converting parallel to USB), it will be split off from it into a thread of its own.

Thanks for the info, alternaut. And for making this a separate thread.

I followed your directions, but the browser could not connect to the print server.

I've run out of this to try. Time to get an RMA. Sigh...

Anyone know who might want a great-running LJ4, Postscript, built like a tank?

Harv,

Before you go off the deep end, let me amplify and expand Alternaut's instructions for how to configure your print server just a bit....

Here's a short tutorial on how to network using TCP/IP:

To ensure that there are no conflicts, please take a look at your own computer's IP address while attached to the home network (BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES) and see if it is in the range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.200 ---- if so there is no conflict with setting the IP address for the print server to 192.168.1.10 as that MANUAL setting falls within the subnet but outside of the DHCP automatically assigned pool.

To make a custom two device network (your computer AND your print server) you need to have BOTH devices set manually to the same address pool. Since your print server comes pre-set to 192.168.0.1 you will have to MANUALLY set your computer to a similar address temporarily in order to make this work --- try 192.168.0.2 --- now that you know the plan, disconnect your computer from the main network (unplug the cable or turn off the Airport card) and connect the two devices with an ethernet cable and point your browser to the IP address of the print server.

Once you make contact, you will need to configure the print server to manually have a new address that MATCHES THE ADDRESS POOL OF YOUR NORMAL NETWORK. So this means you have to know what the normal address pool is that your router serves to all the other computers and devices in your home network.

Since your home network is serving IP addresses in the range of 192.168.1.x, I'm going to suggest that you set the print server IP address to be 192.168.1.10 so that it can live on the same network (if the configuration process in the print server wants a router IP use 192.1681.1 for that it will probably want a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 as well).

Once done inside the print server, disconnect the ethernet cable from between the two devices and set your computer back to the automatic networking settings that you had before. Hook the computer back up with your normal network and plug the print server into the router and printer as appropriate.

This all sounds a little daunting but basically it summarizes to this:

You need to temporarily create a two device network so you can tell the print server how to play nice with your main network....once the print server is configured, you just return your computer to its' normal state and plug both it and the print server into the normal network....your printer should now be served to the network through the print server like you originally wanted.

Let us know how it goes.

Just went back and saw a typo, but too late to edit....the option has timed out.

The sentence above should be corrected to show 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.1681.1 ---- sorry for not catching that sooner.

Hope you got your gizmo configured.

Let us know.
