I assume that Stuffit 8 has been breaking my applications after a decompression from stuffit expander. The problem is when I launch a program that has been decompressed from stuffit expander that's not inside of a dmg it quits. It just blinks in the dock noting even showing the icon just quitting instantaneously. Is there a workaround ? It's frustrating because I use some developer applications which are affected by this.

Ahh, I've experienced the exact same problem, I didn't even think that it could be breaking them by decompressing them.... hmmm....

The problem is I'm having it break programs that even ARE inside of a DMG files... so I'm not sure if its the expanding that is breaking them, but stuffit expander itself being on the system and integrating w/ the kernel.

I don't suppose you have an extra mac around that you could extract a program on that isn't working for you w/ stuffit 7, and then install stuffit 8 deluxe and see if it breaks it?

lemon2K and ZildjianKX,

This is a known issue. Read this link. In the meantime, I would type the following using the "Terminal" application which can be found in the "Utilities" folder which is in the "Application" folder:

chmod -R 755 NameOfApp.app

Make sure you "cd" to the directory where the application is located or type the path to the application before its name when you type this command. I hope this helps.

Only problem is I'm having programs break that Stuffit Deluxe 8 didn't even extract, as soon as I install Stuffit Deluxe 8...

ZildjianKX,

Do you have the StuffIt AVR kernel extension installed or have you removed it by uninstalling it? If you have removed it, please post a link to a program that you're having problems with and I'll check this out. If you remove the StuffIt AVR kernel extension, it's highly unlikely that StuffIt Deluxe is the source of your problem. Tell me what operating system version you're using and post a link to the problematic file and I'll try to help you troubleshoot it.

Thanks noldo66 for replying and helping. I knew how to do this via terminal. I was hoping rather to just install a fix instead of doing this for every application I decompress or problematic. And for the rest of the unsavvy folks around would have a hard time understanding that technical stuff. I am aware that aladdin is currently making a fix for it. Yay!
Again thanks for posting the solution atleast it will help others who want or need this temp fix

My thread below this one describes my problem. The particular program is the newsgroup reader Thoth, and the program DVDBackup. I did a fresh install of OS X 10.2.7 (G5) with a format, installed the programs (extracted w/ Stuffit Expander 7), they worked fine, rebooted, they worked fine... installed Stuffit Deluxe 8, rebooted, they died. Uninstalled Stuffit Deluxe 8, they still didn't work. Did an upgrade install of OS 10.2.7, still didn't work. Did another format install of OS 10.2.7, stuck w/ Stuffit Deluxe 7, no problems.

ZildjianKX,

This is the same executable permissions problem that has been described in this link and the link I posted above. But let me explain in detail what I've done:

I downloaded both applications you listed immediately above. The files that were downloaded were "DVDBackup_13.bin" and "thoth-1.7.1-x.sit.bin". Even though the first one doesn't have a ".sit" extension, both of the files are contained within ".sit" archives hence why they're not working correctly if expanded by Deluxe 8.0. If I run the following commands in the Terminal:

chmod -R 755 DVDBackup.app

chmod -R 755 Thoth.app

when I'm in each of their directories, both applications will run. I hope this clarifies things. ZildjianKX, if you have any further questions or something is not clear, please post back and I'll try to help you.

Thanks for the response. I have two quick questions though.

-Should it be breaking permissions even if it wasn't the program used to extract them? I extracted them w/ Stuffit Expander 7, and they quit working after I installed Stuffit Expander 8 on the system.

-Shouldn't running a "repair disk permissions" on the disk fix the problem? I did that, and it didn't...

And... this is a pretty nasty problem stuffit creates, especially since its not easy to figure out which program is causing the problem.

ZildjianKX,

1) If you're really using StuffIt Expander 7 with the version 7 engine correctly installed in "/Library/CFMSupport/StuffItEngineShell.cfm" then it shouldn't be happening. You could still have StuffIt Deluxe's 8.0 engine there instead of version 7.

2) About these applications quitting to work after you installed StuffIt Expander 8.0, I don't know what to tell you except that I'm pretty confident that we don't do anything that would impact an application that is already functioning correctly prior to installation. I'd really have to take a look at your system in order to see what's going on since on my system (i.e., 10.2.6) I have no problems launching these applications while StuffIt Deluxe 8.0 is installed.

3) As for running "Repair disk permissions," unfortunately, this won't necessarily fix these executable permissions depending on what permissions are there beforehand.

We apologize for the inconvenience again and we are going to be providing a fix for the executable permissions issues when expanding ".sit" archives in the very near future. I can't say when but I know it will be coming. If there is anything else you need help on or I didn't explain anything clearly enough, please post back and I'll try to help you.
