Anyone got thoughts on or experience with up-sampling DV-cam footage to DVC Pro and DVC Pro 50? I have a film we shot using an old Sony Pro Hi-8 camera - we liked the softer film like look that we got but as the tape is so unstable we "sub-mastered" to DV-cam. The footage looked lovely and has held really well. the film is now complete and I have been experimenting with exporting a section of the timeline as DVC-Pro and DVC 50, the files are of course bigger but I can't see any difference.
I decided to try because I was so impressed by what happened when we transferred the Hi-8 to DV-cam, that I thought I'd see. It might just be that I am looking at it on a 17" Sony Broadcast monitor and would need something larger to spot any difference. Since we want to project the film onto a reasonable size screen I am concerned to get it looking a bit sharper.
We now have a Panasonic DVX-100A and if I was to shoot the film again I'd use this in Progressive Scan mode using the Cine scene file but that is not possible now. So, any opinions anyone?

when you captured your hi-8 into a dv deck, the deck itself did the A/D conversion. The nice results you saw were as a result of that. Exporting it at a higher file size will not increase quality. Maybe you want to also think about color correction?

Now, there are plugins for After Effects that you can get to do image processing on your project that can further enhance it and prepare it for a larger screen.

Do you want to convert it to 24 frames per second? If you use a decent dvd player into your projector or large screen tv, you can convert the video to progressive intead of interlaced.

Magic Bullet works very well, but it is expensive. But, I think it may be what you are looking for. It can give your dv footage a film look. Also consider the Grain Surgury.

Thank you, the work that the D/A converter does, to DV-cam, is wonderful - I was looking to add to this "quality" enhancement. Your suggestion of Magic Bullet looks right, I've been to their site, either one buys the 279 dollar set or the 796 dollar set. Not sure if all that you suggest is in the cheaper set. I'll investigate further, nice idea though.
