help?

I did the 4.2 airport update a while ago and it worked a treat.

Today when I was checking my security settings in airport it asked to update the firmware to 6.2 - I did and immediately lost internet connection.

iTunes still works and I can get connected (as I am now) through using the ethernet straight into the computer.

I changed the firmware back to 6.1.1 - but alas! still no connection. I must confess to poking around everywhere - but no joy.

Each time I try something on the airport it fails, but if I turn it off - connect the ethernet cable - renew the DHCP info for built in ethernet and apply it - then I can connect straight to the modem.

Help! any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem and have tried everything mentioned on these forums, to no avail. The only thing the works for me is getting very close to the base station, hardly thepoint of a wireless network.

Are you running 10.3.x or 10.4.x?

It has become obvious from reports appearing in many forums that the latest firmware offered by the Airport 4.2 upgrade is faulty – both for the Express and for the Extreme. Everybody (including myself) seems to be reporting that a simple regression to the previous firmware (and, yes, the older firmware version WILL install over the new one) solves the problem instantly. I suspect very strongly that you have not YET found the same because "I must confess to poking around everywhere" ( ). Keep Airport 4.2, keep the previous version of the firmware and do the necessary additional "poking around" to return all your settings to what they were.

This is good to know. Thank you for this information alert. However, are you talking about the AirPort 4.2 update that shows up when you click Software Update? The reason I'm asking is because I got an AirPort 4.2 update in my Software Update window when I checked for the latest software, and I installed it, and I've had no problems whatsoever. Is this the update you're talking about or something entirely different? If it *is* what you're talking about, why haven't I had any problems with it?...

Most people haven't had any problems with it, but for an unlucky few it's been a disaster.

Oh, that's just great. If Apple continues to post their software updates before it's been safely tested and detects no bugs, people are going to stop trusting the company. And this is coming from a former PC user. I'd be really pissed--and would consider going back to PCs--if Apple messed up my computer with their negligence in software update precautions.

"why haven't I had any problems with it?"

I thought I had made it clear that the problem reported is not with the Airport 4.2 upgrade but with the firmware upgrade that you may be invited to download when you first launch Airport Admin Utility 4.2.

With regard to: "if Apple messed up my computer…" I have heard of no instance of anyone's machine being "messed up". Neither has the empirical experience of a few of us identified the cause of the problem. The most common reason for such occurrences, which with Apple are rare, is a fault in the user's setup; I don't think that applies here but I have not conclusively proved it. Your vociferous indignation may be premature. May I sugget that, with the .dmg for your current firmware to hand should it be needed, you upgrade your firmware so that you can add information to the pool?

"for an unlucky few it's been a disaster"

"Disaster" is a bit strong – more like just a bit of a waste of time. After all, the cure was swift and simple, with no aftermath.

No, you didn't make it clear. Why? Because I don't know what "firmware" is! LOL I just saw "AirPort 4.2 update" and freaked out. (Sorry, the mistake is mine. New Mac user here!)

Firmware is a kind of software, but one that you cannot interact with as you can for instance with an app, and it is always associated with some specific hardware – in this case it sits in your Base Station where it enables the Base Station to do its job. Disks have firmware that is loaded into a part of the disk to which you, the user, have no access, and which decides amongst other things where on the disk to store the items you save. A ROM contains a type of firmware, etc, etc.

Launch Airport Admin Utility (probably in your Utilities folder) and, now that you have Airport 4.2, you will probably be invited to download the firmware update for your Base Station.
