Perhaps this will be of value---

QT 7.0.4 crashes DiskWarrior 3.0.3

After reading the report about QT 7.0.4 being pulled and then reposted, I DL’d the stand-alone version, reinstalled it, and then Repaired Permissions.

But when I run DiskWarrior, at the conclusion of step 10, upon being advised that the “Directory Was Successfully Replaced”, DW crashes.

This occurred on my DP 800/10.4.4 and on a PB G4/10.3.9. In both cases I had installed QT 7.0.4.

Note: the above problem only occurred when running DW from one volume on another. It did not happen when I ran DW from the CD.

Reverting to QT 7.0.1 resolved the problem on both computers.

Interesting, Harv. I installed QT 7.0.4 yesterday before I saw the news about possible problems. I don't know if I got a bad version, but I tried a QT movie, which worked fine. This morning, I ran DW from another volume before updating to 10.4.4 and had no issues either. Any thoughts on the discrepancy between us?

Jon, When you ran DW from the 'other' volume, was QT 7.0.4 on that one too?

For me, the issue only surfaced if the source/startup volume is also running/has installed QT 7.0.4.

That's why, I think, that the problem is not evident when running DW from the DW CD.

If you can/will, install QT 7.0.4 on the boot volume and then run DW.

Do you then (also) have the problem, or is it just me?

(2x1.8 G5/10.4.4/QT 7.0.4/iTunes 6.0.2)

I had exactly the same experience as pendragon when running DW from the startup drive to repair a partition on another, internal drive.

I used the QT 7.0.1 reinstaller to get rid of 7.0.4, but iTunes 6.0.2 requires QT 7.0.3, so I ran the QT 7.0.3 installer.

DiskWarrior once again behaves as normal.

I'll be reading MFI to see when it's safe to run QT 7.0.4 again.

Harv,

I didn't have QT 7.0.4 on the other volume. Very soon, I'll erase my backup and clone from the main drive. At that point, I'll see if there's a problem with DW. If so, I'll revert to a previous version of QT. In any event, I'll post back with my results.

BTW, I did not run DW from the CD, but from my secondary hard drive.

You should report this peculiar result to Alsoft, and see if there is any relevant data in the CrashReporter log for Disk Warrior, or in the console or system log.

Hello again, Harv,

I didn't wait. I ran DW from the volume that had QT 7.0.4 and can confirm your observation. DW got to step 10, then "unexpectedly quit". I reverted to QT 7.0.1, tried DW again, and all was normal.

I did not see anything in Crash Reporter, but I did find something in System Logs. I reported the issue to Alsoft and also submitted a Late Breaker report to MacFixit. If anyone can interpret the log, here it is:

Ah, great minds...

Upon occurrence, I submitted the DW Crash Log to both Alsoft and Apple. Sorry I did not initially mention that.

I recently received email from Alsoft indicating that they are of the opinion that the issue is with QT, but that the "crash" is harmless.

Thanks for posting the details, which show some problem with writing the .journal file that for some unknown reason goes away when the earlier version of QuickTime is installed.
