I just installed the latest Stuffit Expander. It now appears that my NAV is hosed. (I am using the latest version of NAV - 10.1 and am using OS 10.4.5) When I did the install of SE I disabled NAV Auto-Protect. After the install of SE, I tried to enable NAV Auto-Protect and received the message "NAV Auto-Protect could not load the scan engine. PLease run LiveUpdate to get the latest version (Code: 6)" I did this to no avail. When I try to run NAV, I get a message that NAV could not load the scan engine and that I shoudl reinstall NAV. What would you suggest?

hi there-

I was JUST about to post on this. We are talking with Allume to see what happened and are trying to reproduce it now. I will give you a headsup asap.

And, by the way, not everyone can just remove anti-virus protection. Some work environments require you to have it on. I know it's not helpful that there is an error, I just found out about it, and I am working on it.

thanks,
mike

hi--
Just wanted to let you all know we have reproduced this. The StuffIt update is deleting some of our files and we're addressing it.

thanks,
mike

UPDATE - 5:17PM PST

Allume recognized the issue; they have removed the updater and will post a new one tomorrow.

thanks guys,
mike

UPDATE:

This does NOT happen with the StuffIt Deluxe 10.0.2 updater.

thx,
m
--

We have verified what is happening:

So Norton AntiVirus uses this...

/Library/Frameworks/Stuffit.framework

After installing Stuffit Expander 10.0.2 I'm left with...

/Library/Frameworks/Stuffit.framework
/Library/Frameworks/StuffitSupport.framework

Both are empty. Not symlinks, either.

Looking inside of the Stuffit Expander bundle, we can see...

- Stuffit Expander.app/Contents/Frameworks/Stuffit.framework (which has mostly
the same files as ours with some updates, but appears to be missing
StuffitCore.dylib and StuffitSupport.dylib)

- Stuffit Expander.app/Contents/Frameworks/StuffitSupport.framework (which
doesn't contain much of anything except for a StuffitSupport binary)

More investigation underway.

I apologize for this inconvenience; the Mac team is working on this as quickly as we can.

best,

-mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for tracking this problem down. I uninstalled SE 10.0.2 including the Framework (Engine) and installed SE 10.0.1 including the frameworks files. Auto-Protect seems to be working fine now. So it appears I'm back to where I started before the install of SE 10.0.2. I guess it doesn't pay to install a new app. or util. too soon.
Thanks again,
Mike D.

Hi, Mike--

Thanks for your nice note. Yeah, this kind of thing is annoying to everyone. Thankfully, we have a great relationship with the folks there at Allume/SmithMicro and we were able to get this figured out pretty quickly. Pretty nuts, though!

I'll be posting when the new fix goes up!

Have a great night,
mike

Interesting. I am running corporate version of NAV 10.1 on a DP 2.3. GHz G5 under OS 10.4.5. Yesterday I installed Stuffit Deluxe 10.0.2 and did not have any problems. Today I did the virus definitions update and it performed as expected. After reading this thread and a MacFixit alert I enabled NAV auto-protect (I keep it disabled) and did not get any messages. Then I disabled it again without any warnings. Could the problem be related to the fact that you just need a logout/restart after updating to 10.0.2? My computer had one restart with auto-protect disabled between Stuffit and NAV updates. Or is Deluxe somehow different from the free Expander?
It would be interesting to hear Mike Romo's take on this as well.
Alex
P.S. Oops! I missed Mike's reply on SD. Sorry, folks!

Indeed, as Mike said, this does NOT happen with StuffIt Deluxe (which of course includes StuffIt Expander). I did the SD update and NAV 10.1 is fine.

Hello, Mike! Really appreciate your going to bat for us on the Stuffit Expander update issue.

I thought I'd share here what I just posted as a comment to the MacFixIt.com Latebreakers item today (March 10):

In reply to:

MacFixIt reader Terry writes:"I wanted to report the the new Stuffit 10.0.2 breaks Symantec's Norton
Antivirus 10. A quick re-install of Norton Antivirus and updating it with Live
Update make it work again."

My experience on a Dual G5 2.0 running OS 10.4.5 and Norton AntiVirus 10.1
was similar to that of MacFixIt reader Terry. I can offer more detail: I went
into the Norton Solutions folder in /Applications and ran the uninstaller to
remove entirely NAV before installing NAV from the CD and updating it with
Live Update.

BEFORE uninstalling NAV, I noted that removal of Stuffit Expander and
replacement with an earlier version still crippled NAV's autoprotection.
Installing NAV anew AFTER installing the Stuffit Expander worked like a
charm.

That led to my hunch as a layman that what corrupted NAV was the
Stuffit Expander installation process, not Stuffit Expander itself.

Respectfully, Norm
