More test results
Recap from 08 Oct 2003
Test #1 Put to sleep (assume by closing lid) with USB Scanner > PB
Upon wake not able to connect to scanner w Photoshop Elements 2.0
forced to restart to get it to recognize/connect to scanner.
this one was an unintentional "test" - it just happened
Test #2 Sleep Floppy + 940C > Hub > PB
Upon wake Kernel Panic 01 <KP01>
reboot, run Apple System Profiler <ASP>, Repair Permissions <RP>, reboot in Safe-Mode <SM>, reboot into Single-User Mode <SUM>, run fsck -y, reboot w CD, run DFA, reboot w Hardware Test CD, run extended test, reboot normal.
this one was also an unintentional "test" - it just happened
Test #3 same physical config as KP01,
upon wake KP02
did same set of fixes etc. except did not do DFA or HW Test.
Test #4 same physical config as KP01,
upon wake KP03
difference this time is PB would auto shutdown just before kp/restart message
did same set of fixes etc. except did not do DFA or HW Test.
new set of tests 09 Oct 2003
Test #5 external Firewire HD <FWHD>, plugged in both partitions mount
let backup routine run overnight, PB went to sleep, in this case only, by Power Management timeouts...as usual.
No KP upon wake
Test #6 USB Hub > PB alone
Test #7 USB Floppy > PB alone
Test #8 HP 940c Deskjet printer > PB alone
Test #9 Floppy > Hub > PB
Test #10 940c > Hub > PB
all of the above led to No KP
Test #11 Sleep Floppy + 940C > Hub > PB <same as 1 thru 3 - wanted to see if still would do it, i.e. can recreate KP>
upon wake KP04
never got the kp/restart message, just before it would have, should have displayed kp/restart message PB would shut down, as with KP03 above.
fixes/repairs as above KP02 & KP03
Test #12 Firewire alone
put to sleep by closing lid <see Test #4>
No KP
Test #13 FW and scanner + 940c + Floppy > Hub > PB
No KP
Test #14 as with Test #13 with FW volumes dismounted
No KP
Test #15 FW and Floppy + 940c > Hub (like other KP configs but with FW)
put to sleep, pull out FW (volumes dismounted before sleep)
plug FW back in
wake from sleep KP05
auto shutdown before display of kp/restart message
fixes/repairs as above
Test #16 Scanner + Floppy > Hub > PB
Interim conclusions
A. 2 ways to put to sleep X 6 USB devices X 2 USB plugs X 4 plugs on Hub X 5 USB devices factorial x 2 FW device states x 2 plugging in awake/asleep methods for FW device x 2 plugging in awake/asleep methods for x 6 for USB devices = a huge number of permutations.
B. 16 configs tested, conclusions must be interim
C. Combo of 940c + Floppy > Hub > PB
is one culprit for causing KPs
D. C is a repeatable, reproducible test
E. Running RP, ASP, boot in SM, or SUM and run fsck -y, does no good except waste time.
F. I am not wasting more time testing configs.
G. will/must try pingopuck's suggestion to delete com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
see MyConfigurations in signature for logs, and system, component details.
